Zimbabwe marked 45 years of independence in 2025,
- but many citizens feel there is little to celebrate due to ongoing crises:
- *Economic Collapse* – Hyperinflation, unemployment, and currency instability persist, with failed attempts to revive the Zimbabwean dollar.
- *Political Repression* – The ruling ZANU-PF party maintains power through disputed elections, crackdowns on opposition, and suppression of dissent.
- *Corruption & Mismanagement* – Elite corruption and looting of resources have worsened poverty and inequality.
- *Mass Migration & Brain Drain* – Millions have fled due to lack of opportunities, weakening the country’s skilled workforce.
- *Humanitarian Crises* – Food shortages, droughts, and a broken healthcare system keep Zimbabwe dependent on aid.
Despite independence from colonial rule, Zimbabwe remains trapped in economic and political turmoil, leaving many citizens disillusioned. Without major reforms or leadership change, true freedom and prosperity remain out of reach.
On April 18, Zimbabwe is "apparently" commemorating its forty-five years of freedom from the colonial rule as Independence Day draws near.
Emmerson Mnangangwa became president when Robert Mugabe, Zimbabwe's long-time leader who had ruled since the country's independence in 1980, was overthrown by a military coup. However, 45 years later, many Zimbabweans feel there is little to celebrate. Instead of prosperity and freedom, the country has been plagued by economic collapse, political repression, and widespread corruption, leaving citizens disillusioned with the promises of independence.
President Emmerson Mnangangwa has failed to bring meaningful reform. The economy remains in shambles, with unemployment soaring, currency instability, and basic services like healthcare and education in decline. Political leaders and activists jailed and elections marred by allegations of fraud.
The only people who are enjoying independence in Zimbabwe are Mnangangwa and his corrupt Zanu-Pf government, who are looting the country’s funds for their gain and pleasure.
For ordinary Zimbabweans, independence has not translated into better lives. The dream of a free, prosperous Zimbabwe remains unfulfilled, leaving citizens to ever wonder whether true liberation was ever achieved. After 45 years, there's no independence to celebrate only a legacy of broken promises.
A Call to Action: 45 Years of Stagnation – The “Walk to Nowhere” Campaign
On 18th April 2025, Zimbabwe will mark 45 years since its historic Independence, a hard-won victory achieved through the sacrifices of the Zimbabwe People’s Revolutionary Army (ZIPRA) and the Zimbabwe African National Liberation Army (ZANLA). This milestone should be a time of celebration, reflection, and pride in the promise of a free and prosperous nation. Yet, for many Zimbabweans—both at home and in the diaspora—the reality of independence feels hollow.
Decades of misrule, corruption, and repression have left the country in a state of stagnation, where the dreams of 1980 have faded into a "nowhere" of unfulfilled potential.
To mark this bittersweet anniversary, the Zimbabwe Human Rights Organisation (ZHRO) is launching a bold new campaign: the “Walk to Nowhere”—a combined Independence protest and a symbolic 45-mile (or 45-kilometre) walk. This initiative builds on ZHRO’s established “Walk for Freedom” campaign, which, since 2017, has seen activists cover gruelling distances—such as the 105km trek from Brighton to London—to highlight the ongoing human rights abuses and lack of democratic progress in Zimbabwe. Now, on this 45th anniversary, we invite Zimbabweans and their supporters worldwide to join us in a poignant demonstration that mirrors the nation’s journey: 45 years, 45 miles, and still nowhere near true freedom.
Why 45?
The number 45 is more than just a marker of years since Independence. It is a stark symbol of Zimbabwe’s arrested development. After 45 years, millions of Zimbabweans endure poverty, unemployment, and repression under a regime that has clung to power since 1980, led by the Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF). The liberation armies fought for self-determination, equality, and justice, yet today’s Zimbabwe is plagued by economic collapse, rampant corruption, and a ruling elite that prioritizes power over the people. The “Walk to Nowhere” reflects this paradox—a long, arduous journey that has led not to progress, but to a dead end.
The “Walk to Nowhere” Campaign
The “Walk to Nowhere” is both a physical and symbolic act of protest. From 18th April 2025, for a YEAR, ZHRO calls on activists, diaspora communities, and allies to participate in walks spanning 45 miles (approximately 72 kilometres) or 45 kilometres (approximately 28 miles)—distances that echo and reflect upon the 45 years since Independence. These walks will take place across the globe, from the streets of Harare (given sensible precautions see below) to the countryside of the UK, South Africa, Europe, USA and beyond, wherever Zimbabweans and their supporters reside.

E. D MNANGAGWA MUST NEVER HAVE A 2030 EXTENTION!
E D Mnangagwa must not get a third term because it is unconstitutional.
Mnangagwa is using the same 'script' but with different players from Robert Mugabe. He is consolidating power through blatant fraudulent means.
Robert Mugabe wanted to die in power, and E D Mnangagwa is aiming to do so.
Zimbabwean elections lack fairness and transparency. 'Allegations' of vote rigging, intimidation, and violence marred elections of 2008, 2018, and 2023. Judges have been pressured to make rulings favourable to the ZANU PF regime.
Robert Mugabe wanted to die in power, and E D Mnangagwa would like to die in power.
Robert Mugabe used brutal dispossessing motivated by his One-Party-State ambition. This is what ED Mnangagwa doing since his ZANU PF party failed to get the two-thirds majority he required in the August 2023 elections. He required it for constitutional changes for his personal benefit as we now know about his 2030 term extension.
He sent out a ZANU PF imposter, Sengezo Tshabangu, to recall more than twenty duly elected CCC members of parliament and replaced them with loyal ZANU PF members. He successfully achieved it because the House of Parliament Speaker and the Judges were 'pressured' to make rulings in favour of the ZANU PF party.
ED Mnangagwa and his ZANU PF regime are using coercion to control the political power process, they stifle dissenting voices, curtain political & civil liberties, their lack of accountability, human rights violations and impunity while exploiting an atmosphere of fear and intimidation.
E D Mnangagwa must not get a third term extension because the suffering of the citizens is endless.
E D Mnangagwa and his ZANU PF party were rejected by the people in August 2023 elections. They rigged and still couldn't get two thirds majority, until when they crafted an idea of violence and illegal means to add up to the number they have. Zimbabweans are grieving in our hearts on the ongoing pain of the ZANU PF regime.
We cannot have a family running our country at their pleasure. Zimbabwe is not a dynasty.
We need leaders who remain law-abiding, remain grounded by a deep sense of humility and a 'servant' attitude. We need a real Democracy in Zimbabwe, not this current ILLUSION of Democracy.

Update: 24th October 2024: Last minute {early hours @2:30 am} additions to both petitions and now links to Read/Download from here: 13:30 Injustice Petition: READ/DOWNLOAD HERE
14:30 Maternal Deaths Petition: READ/DOWNLOAD HERE
Later today {or this evening} we will do a new article to log the day's events, photographs and reactions - WATCH THIS SPACE
Update: 23rd October 2024: We have nearly completed both written Petition Documents, ready for tomorrow's Pair of Petitions! In doing so we have had contact with the President of ZAPU, Mr Michael Sibangilizwe Nkomo, the son of Joshua Nkomo. ZAPU are a well established party {est 1963} who pre-date the ZANU PF, and were pivotal in the quest for independence - as granted in 1980.
President Nkomo has written a moving and heart-felt piece about both of our Petition - and we will be quoting these in each Petition Document at the hand over on Thursday 24th October 2024.
See President Michael Sibangilizwe Nkomo - web article here: https://zapu.org/the-rogue-regime-in-harare-now-a-regional-threat-to-sadc.html
Update: 22nd October 2024: Whilst Zanu PF rides 'rough-shod' over Human Rights, the Rule of Law AND the constitution, other external agencies have thrown down a challenge to expose their unparallel level of crimes within and without Zimbabwe. The UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders on the 21st October 2024, Published their report AND the Zanu PF response - for their {Zanu PF} pages and pages of verbage only ONE PARAGRAPH - encapsulated their utter contempt and refusal to face facts - here we quote it verbatim:
"Government {Zanu PF regime response} has also noted the disturbing pattern by some non-state actors to deliberately and mischievously cause anarchy particularly, ahead of major international events, in order to discredit the Government. These unlawful actions, have become sources of unverified information which, unfortunately, are authoritatively used as the basis of allegations of human rights violations against Zimbabwe."
So, its everybody else's fault, and it's all unproven!! Typical Zanu PF response! Blind to reality of their Corruption and Crimes
Well we are ready to expose you on Thursday, draft Petition written, several high profile contributions are on their way. In addition Ed's {so called Presidency of SADC} is looking like planned chaos within the SADC region - election rigging is part of Zanu DNA it would seem.
This will be a first;
-- two separate and discrete petitions delivered to 10 Downing Street on the same day in the afternoon. BE THERE, with all your friends, contacts and those who would support these complex Zimbabwean problems {with the Zanu PF corrupt regime}.
The idea is to engage with the public, the press, the UK Government and FCDO.
Time Table for the 24th October 2024
- Meet at Zimbabwe Embassy, 429 The Strand, London; WC2R 0JR: from 12:00 {noon} onwards to 13:00 - when we march to via Trafalgar Square, and Whitehall to 10 Downing Street

1) Model Pamire (Petitioner)
2) Simbarashe Jingo (Petitioner) [Web Article]
3) Greatman Makipa (Petitioner)
4) Kelvin T Mhlanga (Petitioner)
5) Dickson Chikwizo (Petitioner)

With Basil Kamombe as Organiser.
Reduce Maternal Mortality & Infant Deaths 14:30 @ Gates of Downing Street
The rate of deaths during child birth, and for under 5 year old children is a major cause for concern in Zimbabwe. Particularly distressing is the rate of pregnancies for girls UNDER THE AGE OF CONSENT (18 years old) worse still, even below age 10 - where death during delivery is not uncommon. This is 'heart breaking' and not just an issue with Hospital health services, but a wider social "acceptance" {of sorts} of technical rape of these young girls.
We note in the UNFPA, UNICEF, UNESCO, CESSHAR study written in June 2023 and Finalised in December 2023 {CLICK HERE TO READ or DOWNLOAD}
Official data shows that the vast majority of teenage pregnancies fall in the 18-19 age group, which is above Zimbabwe’s age of majority. A detailed breakdown of the data in the 2015 Zimbabwe Demographic Health Survey, the latest available, shows that 68%, and not nearly 80%, of all teenage pregnancies fall within this age group.
This implies that in the 2015 survey 32% of these pregnancies were BELOW the age of consent!!
The Petition is scheduled to be delivered by:
1) Philis Melody Magejo (Petitioner)
2) Josephine Jenje-Mudimbu (Petitioner)
3) Jane Mundangepfupfu (Petitioner)
4) Diana Machingauta (Petitioner)
5) Chido Shamu (Petitioner)
6) Renee Brenda Langa (Petitioner)
With Ronald Mutumbi as Organiser.
Stop Torture & Abductions
In a wider context and spanning both petition's content and ethos, Zimbabwe's {corrupt} Zanu PF regime, has not signified their rejection of state sponsored TORTURE - one of a very tiny minority of Nations who have failed to uphold this honourable policy {one of only 4 we understand!}.
Torture and Abduction appears to be one of the main 'weapons' used by the {corrupt} regime to oppress any and all opposition.

Mnangagwa is missing opportunities in Zimbabwe
Emmerson Mnangagwa is missing golden opportunities for setting up solid, independent and democratic institutions in Zimbabwe. On the contrary, the main pillars of the state, thus the judiciary, the legislature, the media and the executive are now entangled in a convoluted relationship which has become a well-oiled system of nepotism, political chicanery, kleptocracy, judicial bias, election rigging and constitutional jiggery-pokery.
State Capture:
All government ministers are now competing and overstepping one another in trying to please the {unelected} president. Instead of formulating and implementing policies which benefit the people of Zimbabwe, most of their time is now spent on trivial errands trying to 'curry favour' with the {unelected} president. Ministers and members of parliament are continuously showering undue praise to Mnangagwa. All those extravagant gifts to Mnangagwa are not sincere gifts. The main functions of the executive are policy making thus creating policies which determine how a country is run, law implementation thus putting into practice the laws passed by the legislature, managing and administering public services, establishing and enforcing regulations, overseeing national security, defence and managing foreign relations. It is now evident and observable that Mnangagwa’s {unelected?} government has gone AWOL and spends most of its time kowtowing.
Parliament emasculated and grounded:
The Parliament of Zimbabwe is now in Mnangagwa’s pocket. The opposition party members of Parliament have been neutralised, bribed, infiltrated {in many cases - replaced} and weakened. There is no longer any 'voice of reason' in the Parliament. All members of Parliament are now simply focused on enjoying the trappings of power and the decorum which comes with the office of the member of Parliament.
Many constituencies have no running water, no ambulance, no healthcare, no schools and the rising cost of living is leaving many people in debilitating poverty.
